E119 – Biogas Energy Recovery in WWTP

The valorization of the products generated in the treatment of wastewater and livestock activities, etc., have gained importance due to the increase in energy prices, the use of energy in situ and the environmental requirements set by government agencies.

Within this framework is found the anaerobic digestion of WWTP sludge, which generates biogas, which can be used as fuel, and the digestate that can be used as fertilizer and soil amendment.

Aim

This course offers a comprehensive understanding of the different elements that make up the biogas line in a wastewater treatment plant, including the equipment for biogas energy recovery.

The first module analyzes the main characteristics of biogas, the different sources of production and its different uses.

In a second part, the most important elements of the gas line are reviewed, starting from the equipment to be included in the digester itself and until its arrival at the different points of consumption or storage.

The third part studies the energy use of biogas (production of heat and electrical energy). This part deals with everything related to boilers, heat exchangers, motogenerators, microturbines, etc.
In addition, a module is dedicated to analyzing the risk of explosiveness of the installation and the measures of all kinds to include in the process line.

In the last part of the course, the most important calculation and design criteria of the different elements are presented.

The attendant will learn to size and define the different elements and equipment, based on the main data of the sludge anaerobic digestion and according to the criteria set by the regulations and the industry
